Barbara "Bobbie"
Hutchinson
Oct 13, 1940 — Jul 9, 2024
Barbara "Bobbie" Hutchinson was born in Eagletown, Oklahoma, on October 13, 1940, however she spent most of her childhood in San Antonio, Texas. At age 15 she went to visit her mother in California and lived in Southern California for the next 25 years, where she met her husband of more than 30 years, James Hutchinson. In 1980, the family moved to Houston, Texas, to be closer to the Hutchinson Family. Eventually, she and her husband will move back to California for several years, and ultimately moving back to the Houston area.
Early on Bobbie worked in the restaurant/bar business, then moving on to bookkeeping/clerical work, as well working part-time in retail at Foley's (now Macy's) and Kohl's. She had a strong work ethic and often worked two jobs to provide for her family.
Upon retirement she enjoyed bowling in a senior league. While on this league she met friends that encouraged her to volunteer at Memorial Herman NE Hospital with them. She had logged more than 200 volunteer hours at the hospital before COVID. Bobbie also volunteered with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) Ticket Services Committee for 10 years. Only stopping after a stroke in 2023.
Bobbie was an avid sports fan! Loving her Houston Astros, Houston Texans, and Tiger Woods! She often ragged friends and family that weren't Astros fans. Especially one trip to see family in Baltimore!
Bobbie was horsewoman, although she never rode again after moving back to Texas in 1980. She had a keen target eye with both a pistol and rifle. She loved traveling anywhere and especially loved warm beachy locations. She was a great cook, had a great sense of humor and wonderful laugh. She could read a room and let you know with a glance and bit of a smile what was going on. In just a few words she could let you know exactly what she thought.
She was the fashionista of the house! Never leaving without her hair, makeup, manicure and jewelry just perfect! Her favorite color was red.
Her daughter, Cathy, was her greatest joy. Her eyes would light up whenever she spoke of her.
Barbara "Bobbie" Hutchinson was preceded in death by her parents Alvin and Liddie Maye McKenzie; Her loving husband James Hutchinson; Aunt Pauline Villarreal; and step grandchild Patrick Becker.
Bobbie is survived by her daughter, Cathy Vander Plaats; stepchildren Cynthia Hutchinson, Sandy Hutchinson, Michael Hutchinson, and Michelle Flaharty (Kevin); step grandchildren Michael Hutchinson Jr., Jackie Hooper, Andy Hooper, Nathan Becker, Brenna Nolan, and Paul Becker; Step-great grandchildren Clare Hooper, Grace Hooper, Veronica Noplock, Vivian Noplock, Logan Becker, Kahlie Zeher-Becker.
She will be remembered for how welcoming and accepting she was of her extended family. Regardless of blood, they were family. She adored her extended family and friends, including the Fendley's, Schmidt's, Bajalieh's, Richey's and Lori Bennett. As well as her daughter Cathy's closest friends Gwen Curlee, Andrea Jordan, Katherine Sabom and Kathy Woods, along with all of her Astros season ticket holder family, and the many hospital and HLSR volunteer friends.
