Bobby Jack
Quillen
Aug 7, 1948 — Feb 14, 2025
Bobby Jack Quillen, devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on February 14, 2025, at the age of 76 in Kingwood, Texas. Bobby demonstrated quiet strength and kindness throughout his life, remembered for his warm smile, humble spirit and integrity.
Born on August 7, 1948, in Kingsport, Tennessee, to Floyd and Dana (Renfro) Quillen, Bobby grew into a man of great dedication. He loved basketball so much that you could even find him shooting baskets in the snow. Bobby's hard work and practice resulted in a full four-year basketball scholarship to Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina. While at PC, Bobby did four years of Army ROTC. On August 8, 1969, Bobby married his high school sweetheart, Cathy Susan Begley and subsequently graduated in May 1970 with a BA in Economics. Following graduation, Bobby attended the University of Georgia on a Fellowship where he earned his MBA with an emphasis in Statistics.
Upon completing his education, Bobby served his country and ultimately was promoted as Captain in the United States Army Signal Corps. After his military service, Bobby began his career at Southern Bell in Augusta, Georgia where he excelled as a Management Trainee. He then accepted a position in Industrial Engineering & Wage & Salary at Eastman Kodak in Kingsport, Tennessee. Bobby's career transitioned to various roles in IT with Eastman Chemical Company, where he retired after 38 years of service. Colleagues and friends will remember Bobby for his astute problem-solving skills and his diligence.
An avid golfer and fisherman, Bobby enjoyed the camaraderie on the greens or on the lake with family and friends. Bobby spent many summers during Holly's childhood on the lake, where their family enjoyed time spent on their boat and water skiing. He loved watching college football and basketball and always cheered on the Volunteers. After retirement, he enjoyed friendly competition in pickleball games, loved working in his yard to keep it immaculate, and would always lend a hand to anyone who needed help in repairs or small projects.
Bobby served as a deacon at both West View and Colonial Heights Baptist Churches before moving to Texas. He loved God and lived his life based on his strong faith in Jesus Christ. His memory will be carried by his family and friends who knew and loved him. Bobby's story is one of love, service and quiet strength – a story that will continue to be told with fondness and respect.
Bobby is survived by his wife Cathy, his daughter Holly Quillen Underwood and her husband Jeremy, and his granddaughter Emery Alyse Underwood. Bobby cherished his first-born granddaughter Ellie Grace Underwood and loved her as she went to heaven, where they are now together with the Lord. He also leaves behind his sister, Patricia Quillen Christian, brothers Richard Thomas Quillen and Floyd Walter Quillen Jr, brother-in-law Terry Kent Begley, and sisters in law, nieces, nephews and their children. Bobby was preceded in death by his parents Floyd and Dana and his elder brothers, Prezzle O'Brien Quillen and Ronald Eugene Quillen.
