Harshad Modi, fondly remembered as Husband, Dad to his three daughters and son-in-law, and loving Dadaji to his six grandchildren passed away peacefully on April 28th 2024.

He came from India with a suitcase and $100 and stayed at the YMCA in NYC so he could pursue not only the 'American dream', but also to ensure his daughters and wife, Usha, had a comfortable life. A year after he arrived, the family settled in Baltimore where he worked as a Civil Engineer and obtained a second master's degree.

And even with this busy schedule, he and Usha always managed fun for the family. They did road trips to Chicago, Niagara Falls, Florida and many other places where friends always surrounded them.

This Civil Engineer with a Masters in Mathematics and Science, is also the man that enjoyed his always-in-style clothes, had a love for classical music, photography, 3-card poker and an occasional whiskey — he was living the life he had envisioned for his family.

In the early 80s, Harshad Bhai decided to move the family to Georgia due to a great professional opportunity but all the while, adamant that wherever they lived it would be best for his girls — always his priority. In Atlanta, they made friends that would last a lifetime but also kept in touch with everyone from the past. Weekends were full of dinner parties, classical music and cards. He would say he preferred the peace and quiet but we think he secretly loved Usha always keeping them socially active.

This man was kind, quiet and soulful. He enjoyed deep conversations and was very disciplined in how he took care of himself. He passed this on to his daughters for which they are grateful...all of which were all quite impactful and resonate today. He supported Usha fully when she wanted to start Indian Delights and later they were the husband and wife team that ran one of the most popular Indian vegetarian restaurants in the Southeast.

Through the years, his grandkids were the light of his life. He would fondly take them for lunch, ice cream or to the mall. And there were even times he rode the roller coaster and laughed like a kid with them. The grandkids understood his candor and straight forward nature and had tremendous admiration for the man they respectfully called Dadaji.

Life brought many twists and turns and he was strong throughout all of them. And as independent as he was, his family knew that his deep love for each and every one of them was never ending and always available.

He will be missed by his family and friends but knowing he is at peace is our best way to honor him and hold his memory in our hearts.

In lieu of flowers, we encourage friends and family to honor Harshad by donating to Pratham USA, an organization that supports children's literacy, education and vocational training in India.
