Obituary

John Steven Misitigh of Kingwood, Texas, passed suddenly and unexpectedly on Thursday, September 18, 2025 at age 77. The oldest of 4 children, John was born on March 28, 1948 in Champaign, Illinois, grew up in Ohio and settled in Texas with his college sweetheart, Mary Ellen, after they married on June 5, 1971. John graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in Political Science followed by a degree in Accounting from the University of Houston, eventually becoming a CPA. He held a variety of positions for numerous oil and gas companies over his career culminating as a consultant, highly sought after for his vast experience, integrity and strong work ethic.

John's determination and attention to detail was evident at a young age as he spent his youth building soap box cars, winning several derby trophies. Later he enjoyed traveling with his wife, spending time with family, fishing in both salt and freshwater, baking delicious treats and being a mentor to future accountants in varying roles of committee chairman and board member of both the Houston CPA Society and the Texas Society of CPA's. John also had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, often spending his spare time researching topics of interest especially the Civil War, WWII and astronomy.

John leaves the legacy of his devoted wife of 54 years, Mary Ellen (née Cagney), loving son Michael, daughter-in-law Kelly and cherished granddaughters Reagan and McKenna. He also is survived by sisters Melanie (Greg) and Anne (Randy), numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Helen, and brother Matthew.

John's wisdom, sincerity, dependability, and witty sense of humor will be deeply missed by all who knew him. A visitation will be held Sunday, September 28 at 3 p.m. with a funeral service to follow on Monday, September 29, at 3:30 pm. at Darst Funeral Home, 796 Russell Palmer Road, Kingwood, TX 77339. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Texas Society of CPA's Scholarship Fund or the Houston SPCA.
