In solemn reverence, we announce the passing of Lionel Theopolis Stephens, an esteemed pillar of our community. Lionel, aged 89, of Houston, Texas, peacefully transitioned on May 24, 2024. Born in Fairfield, Alabama, on February 19, 1935, to Jim and Addranna Stephens, Lionel embodied the ethos of service, serving our nation with honor in the Army.

Throughout his illustrious career as a Building Inspection Engineer, Lionel's expertise and steadfast dedication garnered him acclaim as a preeminent professional, certified in all aspects of the unified building code of inspection. His contributions not only left an indelible imprint on the industry but also positioned him as one of the select few, numbering only a hundred, to achieve such distinction across the nation, in 1989.

In 1959, Lionel pledged his love to Marlene, his cherished spouse, and together, they cultivated a remarkable family. Survived by his beloved wife and treasured daughters—Phyllis Richardson (spouse Craig Richardson), Bridgett Bright (spouse Felix Bright), and Zanett Newsom (spouse Donald Newsom)—Lionel's legacy is further illuminated by his adoring grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who held a special place in his heart.

Grandchildren: Krista Griffith (spouse Anthony Griffith), Candace St. Clair, Ryan Richardson (spouse Eva Richardson), Estelle Bright Daly (spouse Francois Daly), Diondre JV Bright, Jasmine Bourne (spouse Robert Bourne), Alexis Santiago, Alysha Santiago, and Mikayla Santiago.

Great-grandchildren: Zoe, Abrielle, Liam, Isabelle, Jade, Diamond, Andrew, Carsen, and Emery.

Additionally, Lionel is survived by his beloved brother Clyde Stephens who shares his birthday, albeit born two years earlier, a bond that transcends time.

Lionel's legacy is a testament to his passion for education, his enjoyment of outdoor pursuits such as golf and 10K runs, his commitment to family, and his appreciation for the soulful melodies of Sam Cooke, particularly "You Send Me." His adherence to a vegetarian (veggie- burger) lifestyle further underscored his dedication to well-being and harmony with nature.

A private funeral memorial service, honoring Lionel's illustrious life, is scheduled for June 22, 2024, exclusively for immediate family members. As we bid farewell to Lionel, we reflect on the enduring impact of his life and cherish the profound memories he leaves behind, forever etched in our hearts. May the Lord Almighty receive him.
