Obituary

Mae Thet Zin Wales, age 90, passed away peacefully at The Village of Meyerland on

October 23, 2024.

Born in Rangoon, Burma on January 12, 1934, Mae is survived by her daughter, Mimi;

her son, Brad; daughter-in-law Judith; grandsons, Zachary, Jared and Carter;

granddaughter Mackenzie; and great friends who were like her "crazy sisters she never

had". She was preceded in death by her father, Prasad Chandra Ghosh; and mother,

Daw Hal Yin.

Mae graduated from St. Mary's Diocesan High School. She went on to the University of

Rangoon, majoring in premedical studies just to 'appease" her father. In true Mae

fashion, she had a disagreement with her anatomy teacher and quit medical school in

her third year. She went on to complete her master's degree in English Literature and

doctoral degree in Law. She would later find herself teaching English at the University of

Rangoon.

In June 1968, Mae and her daughter left Burma, due to the country's political unrest.

They arrived in San Fransisco, where Mae got a job as a mail clerk at Bechtel. She

would go on to marry KC Wales in 1969. They would have a son in 1971; travel the

world until 1976, and divorce in 1984.

Her teaching days began at Crosby Middle School in 1982. She spent the majority of

her career teaching math in Houston ISD at Stephen F. Austin High School until

retirement. Mae also taught developmental math at HCCS SE, until her retirement there

in 2013. She continued to tutor at HCCS well into her 80s.

Family and close friends will cherish the memory of Mae's remarkable ability to engage

anyone in conversation on any topic. She had a unique talent for helping both students

and adults tackle those tricky math problems. Her infectious laughter, self-deprecating

humor and zest for life shone brightly, even as she passionately advocated for social

justice. Her absence will be deeply felt.

A celebration of life event will be held on Nov. 1, 2024, in Mae's memory.
