Maria (Miek) Petronella Smeele Staats of Kingwood Texas died peacefully on July 25, 2024 at age 92. We are blessed that she is now in the arms of our Lord. Mrs. Staats was born in Delft, The Netherlands to Adrianus Antonius Smeele and Anna Margaretha Maria van de Heijden, October 28, 1931.
Miek and Piet were married at the Delft Courthouse on June 23, 1951 and at the Catholic Church in Pendopo, South Sumatra, Indonesia on February 17, 1952. The Staats' immigrated to the United States in Galveston Texas on January 28,1958. Piet was a reservoir engineer with Superior Oil Company which took the young family to Hobbs, New Mexico and Cortez, Colorado before relocating to Houston, Texas in 1963. Miek was active for many years in the Marilyn Estates Civic Club, Foster Mill Village Community Association, Kingwood Area Republican Women and a Past President and active member in the Holland Club.
Mrs. Staats was licensed real estate agent and sold residential properties in southwest Houston. Piet and Miek loved to travel and explored every continent except for Antarctica and collected many mementos of their travels. She had a strong Catholic faith, a quick smile, and loved a good conversation. She loved her five children and their families which always made her proud. She was known as Oma by her grandchildren. Her smile and joy would often cause her to proclaim a heartfelt "Ooh La La" to the surprise and delight to all.
Miek is preceded in death by her husband Piet her son, Peter Paul, her brother Adranius Smeele and her sister, Yoke De Heij.
Mrs. Staats is survived by her daughters, Irene Oldfather and finance', William Buckmaster, Monique Bell and husband Steve, Angela Fadely and husband Jon and Peter's wife, Gina Andre; her son Frank Staats and wife Sharon; her 18 grandchildren, Cole Staats, Willa Staats, Kimberly Campos, Wesley Oldfather, Brittney Oldfather Power, Sheridan Staats Loya, Arianna Staats, Harrison Staats, Nathan Miller, Courtney Miller Fruge', Caleb Bell, Jeremiah Bell, Angelina Bell, Kyle Bell, Austin Bell, Annie Fadely Graham, Lauren Fadely Trainor, and Nicholas Fadely; her 18 great-grandchildren, Preston Campos, Daizy Campos, Aven Campos, Landon Campos, Easton Oldfather, Caden Oldfather, Whitten Oldfather, Quinn Loya, Maddie Miller, Wyatt Miller, Sawyer Miller, Joselyn Fruge', Hayden Fruge', Gwen Graham, Jack Graham, Will Graham, Silas Trainor and Juniper Trainor; and two great-great grandchildren Lotus Campos and Sage Campos.
We especially want to thank those family members and caregivers who have helped our Mom, niece Birgit De Heij, niece Merlijn Smeele, Anastasia McClean, Samantha Meza, Val Holland, Sheila Robinson, Sabrina Teeter, Birsa Orellana, Amy Lawrence, Cindy Lisman and Dr. Ping Wong.
Visitation for Miek Staats will be Monday August 5th, from 5pm to 7pm, Darst Funeral Home 796 Russell Palmer Rd. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 am at St. Martha Catholic Church, 4301 Woodridge Pkwy, Porter, TX 77365. The burial service will be at 12:30 pm at Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery, 7801 Gulf Freeway Dickinson Texas 77539.
