Maria Socorro
Umrysh
Apr 20, 1966 — Feb 25, 2026
Maria Socorro Umrysh was born on April 20, 1966, in Kalibo, Philippines. In 1976, she immigrated to Canada with family, embracing a new chapter of opportunity and promise. She graduated from the University of Ottawa with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1989, beginning a meaningful and dedicated career in healthcare. Socorro served as an Intensive Care Unit nurse in Toronto for nine years, where her compassion, strength, and steady presence brought comfort to countless patients and families during their most critical moments. A deep care for others has always been rooted in her heart.
On her 25th birthday, April 20, 1991, Socorro married the love of her life, Cary Edward Umrysh. Together they shared 34 beautiful years of marriage built on faith, partnership, laughter, and unwavering devotion. She was an extraordinarily loving and devoted mother to her three children—Jordan, Joshua, and Jasmine—who were the pride and joy of her life. In 1998, the family moved to the United States and became U.S. citizens in 2009.
Socorro found great happiness in helping others. She loved traveling, exercising, decorating, and tending to her Japanese garden, but she especially loved being involved with the local community: church, swim team, theatre, YMCA, school activities, and helping others find comfort despite their cancer. Her absolute favorite thing was hosting celebrations for her loving friends, and traveling near and far to spend time with her family. She had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel welcomed, included, valued and loved. Known for her generous heart and gentle spirit, she touched the lives of all who knew her.
She is lovingly remembered and survived by her devoted husband, Cary, and their children, Jordan, Joshua, and Jasmine. She is also survived by her siblings, Gloria, Lyndon, and Robella. She was predeceased by her parents Rodulfo and Bella. Her legacy of love, strength, and kindness will live on in the family she cherished so deeply.
