Vernon Morton, 87, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2019 in Kingwood, TX. He was born on November 9, 1931 in Abilene, TX and was the only child of Rufus and Verna Morton. He is survived by his wife, Edith, of Kingwood, TX: son Ron Morton and wife Susan of El Dorado Hills, CA; daughters, Lisa McInturff and husband Monty of Franklin, TN; and Karen DeBenon and husband Chuck of Kingwood, TX; as well as 8 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 3 step- great grandchildren and one step- great great grandchild.
He graduated from South Lockett High School in 1949 and entered the US Air Force in 1951, serving until 1955. He was trained as an aircraft mechanic. Vernon married Edith Farrar on October 5, 1952. They lived in Sumpter, SC; Irving, Tx; Amarillo, TX (for 62 years); and Kingwood, TX. Vernon worked at Pantex in Amarillo, TX for 40 years and retired in 1997. His retirement years were busy working in the Benevolence Ministry at Southwest Church of Christ in Amarillo, serving the Kiwanis Club, attending Veteran's activities, fishing, working on small engines, playing dominoes and bowling on his church bowling team. He also enjoyed watching his Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers.
Vernon's loves were his wife Edith of 66 years, his children, grandchildren and utmost, his Lord, Jesus Christ. He was a kind and gentle man that loved to help those in need. He touched many on his journey and was a true example of a servant, a loving husband and a devoted father. He will be deeply missed by all.
A visitation was held for Vernon at Kingwood Church of Christ in Kingwood, Tx on April 3, 2019. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Southwest Church of Christ, 4515 Cornell St., in Amarillo, Tx on Saturday, April 13, 2019, with visitation at 10:00 am and services at 11:00 am.
