Richard Newton Murray was born in Summerville South Carolina to L. Richard and Mary Messervy Murray on July 8th, 1938. He attended Toms River High School in New Jersey, and joined the United States Marine Corp on his 18th birthday where he served for 11 years. He trained at Parris Island, South Carolina, where he was a member of the 2nd Marine Division and served as an Embassy Marine in Cambodia and Malaysia. He also served as Yeoman to General Lewis Walt in the 3rd Marine Amphibious Force in Vietnam. He was later stationed at Headquarters USMC Washington D.C.

While in Washington D.C. he met and married Virginia Falls Burrows. He graduated from George Mason University in 1974 using the GI Bill. He joined Sorenson Research Company out of Salt Lake City as part of their Sales Division and later joined with Abbott Laboratories of Chicago, until he retired in 2003. He and Virginia raised their three children in Fairfax, Virginia, Metairie Louisiana, Springfield Missouri and finally Kingwood Texas.

Richard was an active member of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church beginning in 1981. He served as a member of the Vestry, was an enthusiastic choir member, loved keeping the gardens in good shape, was member of many groups including Road Runners, Prime Timers, ROMEO's, the occasional Bible study and Wednesday night class.

He was a member of Kingwood Chorale, enjoyed traveling with his wife Virginia to several countries after retirement, was a voracious reader of all genres and belonged to the Gentleman's Military History Book Club. He spent much time in his garden planting a variety of flowers, most recently directing his wife and children to fill the yard with wild flowers up to days before his passing.

Most of all, he loved his family and is survived by his wife of 57 years, Virginia, their three children Julia Murray Hood, Catherine Murray Archer (Robert D. Archer, Jr. (Kip)), Richard 'Alex' Murray, as well as grandchildren Emma Grace Hood and Robert Archer III (Trey), sister Gloria Fischer of Ocean City, New Jersey, and brother in law Stan Burrows III, and numerous nephews, nieces, and their children, as well as many South Carolina cousins.

A Memorial Service for Richard will be held Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, 2929 Woodland Hills Dr., Kingwood, TX., 77339, with Reverend Celeste Geldreich officiating. Graveside Service will take place on Sunday, June 22, 2025, at 10:30 AM at St. Philips Episcopal Church, 1074 Co Rd. 241, Dalzell, SC., 29040.
