On December 25th, 2023, our beloved father Ruben V. Salazar passed away peacefully in his home. He was surrounded by his family early Christmas morning.
Ruben was born on August 15th, 1938, in Del Rio, Texas, to Sigifredo and Esther Salazar. He was the second of seven children. He graduated from San Felipe High School where he played basketball and was the president of the band, a trumpet player. Ruben enlisted in the United States Army in 1961. He was in the 2nd Armored Division "B" Company at Fort Hood. He was stationed in Germany. After returning home, he was united in holy matrimony to the love of his life Ninfa Arranaga on August 1, 1965, and moved to Austin. He attended the University of Texas at Austin, graduating in May of 1970 with his Bachelor of Arts. While in Austin, Ruben and Ninfa had three children…Ninfa Ysaura, Ruben Alfred, and Louis Anthony. In 1970, he moved to San Antonio to attend St. Mary's University School of Law graduating in 1973 with a Doctor of Jurisprudence. Upon graduating, he moved his family back to his hometown where he practiced law. He was the president of the American GI Forum and active member of the Lions Club.
In 1980 he moved to Houston, Texas. He practiced general law and was a servant his whole life assisting the most vulnerable with their legal issues. Most recently he gave his time to assisting with the ministry of Annulments at his home parish, St. Leo the Great Parish in East Aldine.
Ruben was a staunched democrat who loved his country. He was a passionate reader who loved classical music, jazz, and Vicente Fernandez. He was an attentive listener and a mentor to many, always encouraging others to pursue their education and dreams. He was loyal, trustworthy, most of all, a faithful husband and amazing father, grandfather, uncle, and friend.
Ruben is preceded in death by his parents Sigifredo and Esther Salazar, parents' in-law Fructuoso and Ysaura Arranaga, son Ruben Alfred Salazar, sisters Rebecca Salazar, Rachel Quintanar, Rosalva Yuman, brother Ramiro Salazar, brother's in-law Joe Rodriguez, Rolando Arranaga, Armando Arranaga, niece Dorothy Tovar, and nephews Scott Garcia, Fructuoso Arranaga (Tochito).
He is survived in death by his wife of 58 years, Ninfa Arranaga Salazar, daughter Ninfa Salazar Cruz and husband Deacon Michael Cruz, son Louis Anthony Salazar and husband John Gonzalez, grandchildren Erin Cruz, Zachary Cruz, Bellisima Cruz, Ian Salazar, Annie Salazar, Julian Gonzalez and Avery Gonzalez, sisters Romelia Rodriguez, Rosantina Trujillo, sister in-law Amanda Trevino and husband Jesse, sister in-law Concepcion Flores, brother in-law Fructuoso Arranaga and wife Lydia, brother in-law Hector Arranaga and wife Nora, and numerous nephews and nieces.
