Werner (Wes) Schattner, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, 81, passed away peacefully after complications of a fall on September 9, 2026. He was born in New York City to Emil and Emma Gevert Schattner. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York in 1968. Wes married his devoted wife Kathleen (Kathy) Mank and recently celebrated 58 wonderful, adventurous years together. They were blessed with their cherished son, Stephen, and two grandchildren, Sophia and Knox.

Wes had a stellar career in the power generation industry, first with General Electric in Schenectady, New York as a field engineer and later as Area Manager in Beaumont, Texas. He had extensive knowledge of utility, industrial and marine customers. Later he worked for Gulf States Utilities in Beaumont as plant manager and then as an executive. He completed his career with Suez Energy Generation North America as President and CEO in Houston. He oversaw and visited 58 power plants in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. He knew every plant manager by name and called those working on Christmas Day to thank them for their service.

Wes enjoyed retirement and became the official family chef. He developed the Family Cookbook including favorite German recipes. He loved home life, especially music, and would blast his stereo "til the windows shook. Technology fascinated him and he mastered new information and products. He especially enjoyed preparing AARP tax returns 5 days a week each season. He also prepared accommodation and greeted service personnel at The USO Bush airport. Most of all, his greatest joys were his son and grandchildren who called him Opa.

Wes was preceded in death by his parents, Emil and Emma Schattner. He is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy, and son Stephen Edward Schattner of Frisco, Texas, and grandchildren, Sophia Grace Schattner and Knox Prescott Schattner of Frisco, his sister Elisabeth Schattner of Raleigh, brother Ralph Schattner (Dianne) of Cleveland, Mississippi, sister Karen of Longwood, Florida and sister Margaret (Michael) Maguire of Raleigh; also, nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews and his many lifelong friends.

Wes was a man of integrity, generosity and hard work. He quietly took care of many people both professionally and those in need. His love of family and friends knew no bound. He has left an incredible legacy and will deeply and forever missed.
