OBITUARY

Lynn Dale Avis, 78, of Kingwood, TX was born in Camden, New Jersey on March 3, 1941 and entered into rest on Friday, July 27, 2019. Lynn was the youngest of eight children born to Paul Revere Avis and Helen Roork Avis. He proudly served his county in the United States Marine Corps, where he served from 1959 to 1963 and attained the rank as Corporal, receiving a Good Conduct Medal and Sharpshooter Rifle Badge. After his service, he attended Girard College and San Jacinto College, and soon after began his career as a laboratory technician.

On May 8, he was married to Shirlee Avis in Odessa, TX. After serving in his field for 54 years, Lynn retired in 2009. After retirement he dedicated his time to travel, fishing, hunting, and growing all kinds of colors of tomatoes. In his free time, Lynn enjoyed history- and watched the History Channels or Veterinary stories, collected gadgets he ordered off of TV, and was excited for the annual deer lease and the time he was able to spend at the lake cabin. Lynn was a member of the Jaycees and Masons, and while involved organized the Rattlesnake Roundup in the Jaycees. He will be remembered for being amusing, entertaining, his joy of fishing trips, and hunting Texas game. Lynn is survived by his wife, Shirlee Avis; step-daughter, Maritia Lynn Wilson; grandsons, Justin Gregg, Noah Marburger, Zachariah Marburger; 8 great-grandchildren; and sister, Caryl Blakely.

  1. I was lucky enough to work with Lynn for over ten years. I will remember how he enjoyed making hot sauce and frying fish for us. I will miss having a beer with him at Molly’s. Rest in peace old friend.

  2. I worked many years in the Channelview lab with Lynn. He was a good friend. We were bow hunting buddys in the 80s. We would all meet at the lease in Lometa to fill feeders on Labor Day weekend. On one trip we left work and arrived late that night and went straight to bed. The alarm rang about daylight and it sounded just like my alarm at home that I kept on the floor beside the bed so without waking I reached down to hit the snooze but the clock wasn’t beside my bed at home. it was across the camp house and I was in the top bunk. I reached down and down until I rolled out and jammed my arm into the floor dislocating my shoulder. That really woke everybody up. It didn’t hurt, just kind ‘a hung there useless and I felt like it needed to be pulled on. So I picked it up with good arm and handed it to Lynn and told him to pull. The sucking sound it made as it went back in the socket really gave Lynn the heebie-jeebies but it did the trick. I could move my fingers again. Lynn made me a sling and took me to the San Saba Hospital (after we finished filling the feeders of course). I will always have fond memories of my trips with Lynn and he will be missed. I will see you in the Happy Hunting Grounds Lynn. Scout out a nice spot for me.

  3. I had the opportunity to work with Lynn before he had to move to the South Lab here in the Channelview complex. I always referred to him as “Mr. Cool”. I miss him already!
