Alan Ferrington Merritt

July 6, 1936 - April 28, 2022

Alan Ferrington Merritt, 85, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 28, 2022 in Kingwood, TX. He was born on June 7, 1936 to Carlton and Marion Merritt in Providence, RI.

Alan grew up in Warwick, R.I. And graduated from Warwick schools.  He attended Mount Hermon in Massachusetts for one year.

He attended the University of Maine on ROTC, earning a BA in Economics.  While at UM he was a football letterman, was a member of Beta Theta Pi, and was a member of student publications.

After graduation he served in the US Army.  He was sent to Army Language School, then stationed in Korea.  He also did a stint of Military Intelligence.

He worked at Exxon, USA as a Marketing Analyst.  He completed all the credits except for a thesis toward an MBA at Pace University.

He continued to be active at the University of Maine, He served on various Councils and Boards, was class vice-president and president for a few years.   He was a member of multiple booster groups  and was a patron of the Arts,  He received a Block M Award, a Black Bear Award, and the Stillwater Presidential Award, the highest award for which he was eligible.

Preceded in death by his parents and his sister-in-law Patricia Menchen, he is survived by his wife Sheila (Menchen), sisters-in-law Sandra Puckett and Wendy Avann, brothers-in-law Michael Menchen and wife Jackie, Gary Menchen and wife Peggy, and cousins and nieces and nephews, and many, many, friends.

We wish to thank the awesome Caregivers at Noel Personal Care Home for their wonderful, loving care for the past six months. The Caregivers from ATC Home Health and Oasis Hospice have been wonderful, also, and we thank them, too.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, May 5, 2022 at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, 2929 Woodland Hills Dr., Kingwood, TX 77339
