Antoniou, Elpis

1931 ~
 2022

OBITUARY

Elpis Antoniou was born in Alexandria, Egypt, on March 2nd, 1931, the youngest daughter of Kyriakos and Elli Hitou. She married George Antoniou on July 30th, 1957 and they were married 44 years until his death in 2001. They met in Egypt and she was with him when he studied at Dundee University, after which they moved to London, then Athens, then Montreal and, finally, Wyckoff, New Jersey to provide their son more opportunities. She moved from New Jersey to live with her son, Aris Antoniou, to Kingwood in 2015. She was preceded in death by her older sister Frosso, her parents and her husband. She leaves behind her son Aris and her niece Ioanna, and her beloved neurotic dog, Pluto. She died on February 22nd, 2022 a few days before her 92nd birthday in the presence of her son and daughter-in-law, Christyl Antoniou. When asked why she had a cleaning lady in the early days, she said she was “too slender to dust.” That may explain why she lived so long.

Elpis was a very strong woman in a time when women were expected to be softer, and was a dedicated wife and mother with a talent for cooking. She was funny and sweet and ensured no one left her house with an empty stomach or a sad heart. She was very much loved and will be sorely missed.

  3. I have very sweet childhood memories of visiting my Theia Elpa with my mom in NJ. She was the sweetest “second grandma” & was always so cheerful & hospitable. May she rest peacefully as I have faith her beautiful soul will. Much love.

  4. Thea Elpa was a wonderful soul. I loved visiting her in NJ. Time with her was always memorable because everything she did had a heightened, elevated quality about it. I remember her infectious laugh, her love of animals and her tea etiquette with Destrooper cookies. She was the perfect wife to dear Uncle George – another wonderful soul. I cherish my memories.
