Millie was born in New Orleans, Louisiana to Anna McGittigan McDerby and Warren McDerby. She graduated from St. Theresa School in 1942, Redemptorist High School in 1946 and St. Mary’s Dominican College in 1950. After graduating from Dominican, she became an elementary school teacher in New Orleans. In 1955 she married Carlos Javier Baxter of Monterrey, Mexico. Millie and Carlos crisscrossed the country for Carlos’ job while raising their four children, finally settling down in Houston in 1974. Carlos passed away in 1978, and Millie courageously carried on working and raising her kids alone. In 1993, Millie retired from teaching at Arnold Junior High School in the Cy-Fair School District.

Millie embodied the spirit of her hometown, New Orleans, and loved it with all of her heart.  She never missed an opportunity to go back, especially for Mardi Gras, and was a vibrant example of “laissez les bons temps rouler”.  Millie never met a stranger and loved telling stories, a skill learned and polished in her Irish upbringing.  She was also an avid bridge player and could beat her children and grandchildren in cards until the very end.  She was a prolific reader and loved history. Most of all, Millie loved her family and often said that having her children was the best thing she ever did. She will be greatly missed
