Charlie is well known for his professional football career where he played for the Houston Oilers as a wide receiver for 7 years. Charlie starred for the Houston Oilers from 1960-66 after he earned roster spots out of an open tryout. Charlie was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in1978, and still holds two NFL receiving records and is in the top three of three more. He made the All-Time All-American Football League Team and was chosen by fan vote as a member of the Oilers’ 25th anniversary All-Time Team. He was a 2-time AFL champion, 5-time AFL All-Star. Hennigan caught 410 passes for 6,823 receiving yards for the Oilers, scoring 51 touchdowns. One TD was the first in Oilers’ history. Further notable NFL records include most yards receiving gained in a season held for over 30 years later surpassed by legendary hall of famer Jerry Rice. Additionally, he held the record for most passes received in a season, also held for over 30 years before exceeded by hall of famer Art Monk. Two more NFL records were held for similar time span only to be surpassed by hall of famers Michael Irvin and Lance Alworth.

Given his value of his children and grandchildren, academic, pro football and sales and teaching successes; his cornerstone was always his faith and belief in Jesus Christ as his Lord and savior. As Charlie would most often quote, “This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it!”
