Kurtz, Evelyn A

Evelyn Anna Kurtz, 93 passed away peacefully with her beloved husband, William and daughter, Paige by her side. Evelyn and William moved to Texas in 2008 and have lived at the Isle at Kingwood Memory Care Unit for the past four years.

Evelyn was born in New Your City on July 8, 1923 to Emilie and Frank Budrie. She attended Julia Richmond High School. Athletic, adventurous, coupled with an independent spirit, Evelyn seemed born ahead of her time. She preferred playing cowboy and Indians to wearing a frilly dress, and playing basketball to playing with dolls. Later athletic pursuits included tennis, fencing and bowling.

Although Evelyn and William attended the same grade school, it wasn’t until their late teens when they would meet up again. “Evelyn is full of fun” recalls the caption in her high school yearbook, and is a fitting description of her life.

Perhaps this was what captivated William and they were married on May 6, 1946. Evelyn enjoyed attending Broadway shows. A favorite pastime included meeting up with friends to play cards.

After several years and four daughters, Evelyn and William moved from Manhattan to a house on Long Island, New York, where they lived out the majority of their lives. Evelyn devoted herself to her dear William and raising her family. Later on, her grandchildren brought a special joy to her life. She also loved the family Labrador, Peaches.

Evelyn was civic-minded volunteering for various organizations. She participated in the Women’s Health Initiative, a long-term national study focused on the prevention and treatment of major women’s diseases. Her passion was traveling extensively with William and her girls.

In later years, she joined various bible studies at the Protestant Church. Evelyn volunteered at her local branch of Christian Women’s Club, where she enjoyed fellowship and made dear friends. Not to slow down, Evelyn took up tap dancing at this time, performing at senior homes with her dancing group. William was always by her side and her biggest fan.

Evelyn loved to socialize with family, friends and neighbors. She kept life-long friends as belonging to her own family. However, William was her first and last love and they danced beautifully through life together for seventy years.

Her life will be forever cherished by those who survive her: Beloved husband William; daughters Prudence Kurtz; Pamela Harris and husband Charles; Priscilla Macfarlane and husband Robert; Paige Sheppard and husband Charles; grandchildren Kaivon Paroo and wife Narah; Anjuli Paroo; Charlie Joshua Sheppard and wife Maggie; Ashleigh Wheeler and husband Jeremy; and great grandchildren Harrison, Charlotte, Claire and Evan Wheeler.

Evelyn was one of my dearest friends while I lived on Long Island. She was vivacious, kind and wise. I am so glad she was in my life.
