OBITUARY

Ernest James “Ernie” Loera was born February 17, 1976. He was diagnosed with Autism at a time when it was considered rare, only 4 in 10,000. His diagnosis had a positive impact contributing both locally and nationally to early autistic treatments and research in the early years of his life. He participated in national Autism research projects being conducted by Dr. Bernard “Bernie” Rimland at the Autistic Treatment Center in San Diego, California. Through Ernie much knowledge was given to teachers and support staff on how to identify and educate children with the new diagnosis of autism. His family shared all that they learned with local professionals including helping Humble schools as they established special education departments as PL 94142 was implemented. As he matured he worked through animosity and challenged social norms as society struggled to understand individuals with autism and how to treat individuals who had special needs with dignity and respect.

Ernie enjoyed participating in special olympics in his earlier years. He enjoyed being with others and being a part of his day program where he had many friends. He enjoyed being active in bowling, going to movies, dancing, attending community events with his friends and daily rides with his father. Ernie loved many forms of music but his favorite was classical music with his father. He will be remembered for his infectious smile.

At the end of his life, Ernie generously gave his organs so others could live and helped further autism research studies.

Ernie is survived by his parents Ann and Ernest Loera, brothers Tony Baran and Mark Loera, of Kingwood, TX. Nephews Alex Baran, Benjamin Baran, and Tristan Baran of Los Angeles, California, and many uncles, aunts and cousins.
