Sister Maria Elena Lopez, MCDP was born in Houston, TX on May 22, 1937. Daughter to Antonia G. and Nicholas R. Lopez of Houston, TX., Sister Maria Elena is survived by two sisters, Irene L. Gibson, Sister Mary Rosita Lopez, MCDP, two nieces, Celeste G. Hartigan, Marissa G. Rios, a nephew, Jonathan Gibson and seven grand nieces and nephews.

Sister Maria Elena Lopez professed vows in the Religious Congregation of Missionary Catechists of Divine Providence (MCDP), San Antonio, Texas, in August 1959. As an MCDP, Sister Maria Elena worked in several Dioceses in Texas. For the last 25 years Sister served as Director of Martha’s Kitchen in Houston, TX, the social service ministry of St. Martha’s Catholic Church in Kingwood, TX.

Sister’s kind heart, dedication and passion for feeding the hungry modeled the mission of Martha’s Kitchen:“I was hungry and you gave me to eat; thirsty and you gave me to drink.” (Matthew 25:35)

Sister Maria Elena Lopez will be remembered for her humility, simplicity, love for those she met and her sense of humor. Rest in God’s peace and joy.
Visitation: A visitation was held on 2019-01-25 at St. Martha Catholic Church. with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m.
