OBITUARY

Janet Joann Middleton was known as many things to many people. She was a loved one, a friend, and someone special. To family and friends who knew her best, Janet will be remembered as a very exceptional person and a wonderful Mamaw.

She was the daughter of George Washington and Ora Mae Riffe Howard, and was born April 25, 1939, in Pedro, Ohio. Janet grew up in Lawrence County, Ohio.

Janet was raised with eleven siblings. She had seven sisters, Rene, Bobbie, Ruth, Phyllis, Patty, Sharon, and Jacqueline. She also had four brothers, Milford, Jack, Bill, and Paul. She and her siblings experienced rivalries typical of a growing family, but they shared many life experiences over the years.

A typical teenager, Janet had a fairly happy high school experience, making that critical transition from adolescence to adulthood. She graduated from Blackfork High School in 1957. She was Treasurer of her high school class. In her spare time, Janet liked to babysit to earn her own spending money.

Janet married her childhood sweetheart, James J. Middleton, August 14, 1958, in Coal Grove, Ohio. Jimmy had enlisted in the Army in 1957, and Janet lived the life of a military wife until her husband’s retirement in 1981. They enjoyed 37 years of marriage before Jimmy’s death in 1995.

Janet worked hard to be a good mother to her children and she did her best to fulfill their needs. Janet was blessed with three children, Tammy, Jim, and Mary. Another blessing for Janet was the gift of eight grandchildren, Anthony, Diana, Ben, Daniel, Chelsea, Connor, Janet, and Hannah. Janet also has two great grandchildren, Joseph and Naomi.

Janet enjoyed her leisure time by taking part in various hobbies. Her favorite pursuits were reading, travel, shopping, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Janet enjoyed traveling and time away on vacations. It was a chance for her to renew and relax, to visit new places and experience new things. Favorite vacations included travel through Europe and going back home to visit family.

Janet passed away on March 24, 2013 at home in Humble, Texas. She died of heart failure. She is survived by her children Tammy, Jim, and Mary; her grandchildren Anthony, Diana, Ben, Daniel, Chelsea, Connor, Janet, and Hannah; her great grandchildren Joseph and Naomi; her sisters Rene, Bobbie, Ruth, Phyllis, Patty, and Sharon and her brothers Milford, Jack, Bill, and Paul. Services were held at Darst Funeral Home, Kingwood, Texas. Janet was laid to rest with her husband at Houston National Cemetery in Houston, Texas.
