Scannell, Mary V

Mary Virginia “Ginny” Scannell, 90, passed away peacefully at home on January 22, 2017.  Ginny was born on July 26, 1926 in Louisville, Kentucky to Charles and Josephine Borntraeger.  She attended Our Lady of Mercy Academy and graduated in 1944.  On January 29, 1949, Ginny married Leo Scannell in Louisville, later moving to Abilene, Texas to raise their family.  Ginny and Leo were blessed to have over 40 years together and five children.  She was very active in her parish, St. Vincent Pallotti Catholic Church in Abilene, serving as bookkeeper for many years, and was employed by Sears for over 15 years.


After the death of her husband, Leo, in 1989 Ginny retired from Sears and moved to Arlington, Texas where she enjoyed being near her children and grandchildren.  She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Arlington and joined the senior ministry where she made many lasting friendships.


Although Ginny battled kidney disease in the later years of her life, she remained active, had a wonderful sense of humor and was the heart of the family.  Grandma Ginny was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.


Preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband, and her sister Charlene Vastine of Mesquite, Texas, Ginny is survived by her sisters Wanda Winters of Marshfield, Massachusetts, and June Rectenwald of Louisville, her children Steven Michael Scannell and wife Tracy of Crosby, Texas, James Leo Scannell and wife Tina of Euless, Texas, Cynthia Ann Kennedy and husband Steve of Kingwood, Texas, Kathleen Jo Brookins and husband John Barton of Birmingham, Alabama, and Thomas Charles Scannell and wife Vicki of Arlington, Texas.  She leaves behind 13 beautiful grandchildren:  Laura Snook and husband Billy of Livingston, Texas, Stephanie Vincent and husband Darrol of Kingwood, Texas, Acacia Metzger and fiancée Scott of Keller, Texas, Thomas Scannell, Jr. of Dallas, Texas, James Scannell of Euless, Texas, Paul Scannell of Killeen, Texas, Nicholas Scannell and fiancée Brittany of Bellaire, Texas, Rebecca Scannell of Euless, Texas, Jarred Brookins and wife Sarah of Birmingham, Alabama, Adam Brookins of Birmingham, Caleb Brookins of Birmingham, AnnElise Brookins of Birmingham, and Olivia Brookins of Birmingham.  And four great-grandchildren:  Andrew Vincent, Keoki Mellor, Jenna and William Snook.


Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 24 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Darst Funeral Home, 796 Russell Palmer Road in Kingwood, Texas with a rosary to begin at 7:00 p.m.  Burial service will be held on Thursday, January 26 at 11:00 a.m. at Elmwood Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 5750 US Highway 277 South in Abilene, Texas.

Visitation: A vigil and rosary was held on 2017-01-25 at Darst Funeral Home.
