Heyward Simmons was born on October 31st, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia to Thomas Heyward Simmons, Sr. and Beatrice Hamlett Simmons. Heyward graduated from Boys High School in Atlanta in 1947 and went on to Auburn University where he earned his BS in Business Administration. In 1952 he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He served in Korea where he earned the Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars, United Nations Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. After the Army he received his MBA from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1956 and began his career with Exxon in New York/New Jersey. He spent 35 years at PPG Industries and lived in Florida, Georgia and Pittsburgh Pennsylvania where he held positions as Chief Accountant and Controller. He retired in 1995 and moved to Kingwood to be closer to his family.

Heyward was an avid photographer, golfer and professional sports fan, especially of the Steelers, Pirates and Astros. He also loved music, singing, and scripture reading and was very active in the Episcopal and Presbyterian churches where he held leadership positions. His faith in God was certain and unwavering. Of special note, was his longtime devotion to the Salvation Army. He volunteered his time for 35 years to raise money and awareness for people in need. He had a giving heart and gentle soul that he showed to everyone who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his identical twin brother Edgar Hamlett Simmons, his sister Virginia S. Miles, his nephew Laurence G. Miles and his beloved friend Gwen Anderson. He is survived by his sister-in-law Ramie B. Simmons, his nephew Mark J. Simmons and his daughter and grandchildren Ashley, Erikka and Allison. His nieces include Brenda Simmons, Angie Swanagon, Jo Miles, Bridget Schulten and her husband Rob and their children Sam and Maggie. He also leaves behind dear friends Lee and David Tausendfreund and their daughter Sterling.
